F&SF was one of the "big 3" magazines of the Fifties along with Astounding and Galaxy - a leader in the field as soon as it appeared. It had its own character - a rather eclectic mix of fantasy & SF with an occasional reprint - all up to the standards of the Literary magazines that shaped the standards of modern short story writing. The first 4 issues were quarterly, then it was bimonthly until August 1952, then monthly… for 3+ decades.
