The Compleat Traveller in Black - this first expanded edtion inserts "The Things That Are Gods" from 1979 - into the middle, with cover and 16 illustrations by Martin Springett. I ranked the original 1971 version as a "top 100" book. The time was the unguessably remote past - or perhaps the distant future. Chaos ruled. Laws of cause and effect had little force; men could not know what to expect from their labors. In this universe there was one man to whom had been entrusted the task of bringing reason and order out of Chaos: a man of many names but one nature. He was a quiet man dressed in black who carried a staff made of light, and wherever he went the powers of Chaos swirled around him, buffeted him, tested him. He fought them, and little by little drove them back. "Imprint of Chaos" Early versions of these appeared in Science Fantasy (1960), Impulse (1966) and Fantastic (1970, 1971.) "The Things That Are Gods" was from Isaac Asimov's SF Adventure (Fall, 1979.) "Dread Empire" was nominated for a Hugo award. |
