The only reason I'm not listing this book as "recommended" is that it is fifth in a series which builds upon the earlier books (go find them!) I like the character Mercy Thompson and the whole series (including the "Alpha & Omega" spin-off books) - these are amost as addictive as Bujold's Fantasy/SF, or Laura Hamilton's "Anita Blake" novels.
