All three books of Anne McCaffrey's "Harper Hall" seqence take place at the same time - often in the background, but sometimes shaping events - as the "adult" Pern books like Dragonquest and The White Dragon. After Dragonflight, I find them to be McCaffrey's most enjoyable books, and have re-read my hardcovers many times. They are suitable for adults or younger readers, and I recommend them highly.

Dragonsong - Menolly is the youngest daughter of Sea-Holder Yanus, and tutored in music by Robinton's father, Petiron. She runs away from the hold to survive Threadfall on her own after being told by her father that it was unsuitable for a woman to teach music. While on her own, she discovers and "impresses" a flock of the semi-mythical fire lizards. She has prodigious musical talent, and the Harpers are searching for whoever wrote (her) songs that Petiron had secretly submitted before his death. Menolly runs her feet bloody while running away from the leading edge of Threadfall, and then is rescued by Dragonriders and taken to Benden Weyr. She makes friends there and witnesses the famous hatching where Jaxom impressed Ruth, the White Dragon. At last she meets Masterharper Robinton, who wants her for Harper Hall when he finds that she is the one who wrote the songs that he had needed.
