The Dumarest series lasted about 30 books, and I would recommend most of the early ones (particularly the Ace-Doubles) as good reading. If you're not familiar with the premise, Earl Dumarest was born on Earth, but wandered so far from it in a crowded galaxy that people in the region he is currently in think that Earth is but a legend, like "El Dorado." (The Traveller gaming system, with High and Low Passage, quicktime and basic, is loosely based on the very populated galaxy Dumarest travels in.) He picks up friends and enemies, and occaisionally a clue pointing towards Earth.

Eloise (1975) - The Cybers had been trying to locate Dumarest for years, to gain a secret he held which would solve a problem they had. Slight problem - Earl Dumarest hated the Cybers with good reason. The chase was an exercise in sheer intellect, but so far conducted without success. Now there was an emergency, and the Cyber Prime had to have an answer without delay. After weighing the known factors of Dumarest's movements, it was decided that Dumarest must arrive on the planet Tynar, and the Cybers mobilized to intercept him there. But the girl Eloise intercepted him first. And she was the random factor that the Cybers had not counted on… This is another of the good ones.
