Ace (F-223) 1963 paperback. Condition is only Good: tight and square, spine has some edgewear and endwear, age tanning is mild to moderate and uniform - about average for its vintage (insides of covers are darker and show wear/abrasion); noticeable to heavy overall wear including several short creases on Williams side, finger-creases and worn spot (missing 1/4" piece) at bottom edge on Laumer side. Stamps on first pages and page 85 - from the reserves of a defunct SF library. No other stamps, marks or writing. Since this is tight and square it makes a reasonable impression - despite the many small faults.

Ace Double F-223 (1963): containing Envoy to New Worlds by Keith Laumer, bound with Flight from Yesterday by Robert Moore Williams.

Envoy to New Worlds - (134 pages; cover by Ed Emshwiller.) This is the first collection of Laumer's "Retief" stories. Stories are from 1961-62: originally in If. 4 of them had different titles. Diplomat and troubleshooter Jame Retief must outwit not only various scheming aliens but his bumbling superiors as well. Any of the first 3 collections and first 2 novels were quite enjoyable - I highly recommend them.

[The first-page blurb]:
THEY REVERSED TIME TO WIN A WORLD
Keth Ard was a man long out of a job – and money was running low. His experience as a test pilot seemed to qualify him for the mysterious ad he found in the paper. So he headed for the Beacon Street address and there encountered:

  • A man in a blue toga who made a habit of vanishing
  • A girl with red hair that continually burst into flames
  • A power beam that turned a breeze into a tornado
  • A green stone that turned the past into the present and the present into the future.
