Orson Scott Card: MAPS IN A MIRROR - a major collection of 46 stories (1990.) Hardcover and trade-paperback edtions of this are complete. The final section (Book 5) has not appeared in any mass-market paperback edtion. In the U.S.A., the first 4 sections each appeared as a mass-market paperback, and in Britain there were 2 paperbacks - containing (Books 1+2) and (Books 3+4). This is the first appearance in a Card collection for about half of these. Includes all of the stories from: UNACCOMPANIED SONATA,1981 and CARDOGRAPHY,1987. Designed to "play nice" (by avoiding duplication) with his other collections THE WORTHING SAGA (1990 - which replaced/updated Capitol), and THE FOLK OF THE FRINGE (1989.) This collects most of his fiction to 1990, but deliberately omits "Happy Head" - which was a cover novelette for Analog, and happens to be a Card story I liked a lot. Card's introductions total almost 20 pages, and his afterwords total about 45 pages. This is huge: a large format hardcover - 675 pages. Several stories were nominated for Hugo and/or Nebula awards: "Ender's Game," " Mikhail's Songbird," "Unaccompanied Sonata." "Eye for Eye" won the best-novella Hugo in 1988. Contents: Book 2, FLUX: Tales of Human Futures Book 3, MAPS IN A MIRROR: Fables and Fantasies Book 4, CRUEL MIRACLES: Tales of Death, Hope, and Holiness Book 5, LOST SONGS: The Hidden Stories Sources include CHYRSALIS 4, 7, OMNI, Magazine of F&SF, Gallery, Aboriginal SF, Night Cry, ISAAC ASIMOV'S, Analog, UNACCOMPANIED SONATA, FOUNDATION'S FRIENDS, DRAGONS OF DARKNESS, OTHER WORLDS 1, BERKLEY SHOWCASE 1, SWORDS AGAINST DARKNESS 4, ANALOG YEARBOOK, NEW DIMENSIONS 10, Mountainwest, The Green Pages, The Friend, The New Era, The Ensign. |
