All three books of Anne McCaffrey's "Harper Hall" seqence take place at the same time - often in the background, but sometimes shaping events - as the "adult" Pern books like Dragonquest and The White Dragon. After Dragonflight, I find them to be McCaffrey's most enjoyable books, and have re-read my hardcovers many times. They are suitable for adults or younger readers, and I recommend them highly. Dragondrums - young, brash Piemur had been a star singer at Harper Hall and slated for a lead role in the upcoming spring music event - until his voice broke. But he soon found himself as one of MasterHarper Robinton's special agents, since Robinton envisioned many new roles for the Harpers. Since his musical knowledge is good, Piemur is put into service as a drummer and message-runner. When he is sneaking about Meron of Nabol's compound, trying to pick up useful information, he ends up being taken to the Southern Continent due to an undiscovered connection between the Oldtimers and Meron. After escaping those who had inadvertently kidnapped him, Piemur has to survive on his own in the wilds of the uncharted continent... |
