Sons of the Bear-God by Norvel W. Page. A first edition copy of the second book in his fantasy series about Prester John (sequel to Flame Winds.) Page wrote over 100 of the "Spider" mystery-adventures under the name "Grant Stockbridge." This first appeared in Unknown November 1939. [From the back cover & first page blurb]: An astrologer in far Byzantium had foretold it: the gladiator Prester John would win three kingdoms, and his name would outlive a hundred centuries. One kingdom he had won already - and lost to a woman's treachery. Now he faced the grim sorcery of the beast-worshippers of the mysterious plains of Central Asia - wagering his life for a chance to rule a new and richer kingdom! The Warrior and the Wizard: Prester John, the giant, red-bearded soldier of fortune, master of the sword… and the wizened, treacherous Bourtai, master of sorcery. An ill-sorted pair - but together, a match for the devils of the high grass, the slave-minions of the Heaven-Bear, and the black arts of a league of magicians! |
