Doubleday 1973 hardcover. Cover by Roger Zimmerman, 186 pages, $5.95 cover price. Condition is VG+ to near-Fine in a VG+ dustjacket: book is tight and square with the usual light bumping to spine ends. Extra "ChUSFA" stamps on top page block, bottom page block (gets lost in the remainder speckling), first endpaper, and title-page. Unclipped DJ has no tears, but shows some accumulation of dirt on the white background (more on back cover - see scans); wear at top of spine; sticker-remnant at upper right of front cover. Inside of DJ has ten tape remnants from where a cheap DJ protector was taped - that DJ protector was discarded. Age tanning is very mild, with no marks or writing.

Commodore Tancredi Dalton is caught in the middle of diplomatic plot and counterplot between Hardliners and Softliners. On the eve of the biggest wargames maneuvers ever, he has conflicting sets of secret orders: to start a war - and not to. He outwits a surprise attack by the Hukk, but is then censured and swept under the table for refusing to wipe them out after they surrendered. He has one more confrontation with the Hukk coming up... This last battle is based on "Message to an Alien" which appeared in Analog in 1970.
