A paperback-original of a novel by Keith Laumer: A Plague of Demons. Expanded from serial "The Hounds of Hell" in IF November and December 1964. One of Laumer's best, in his serious SF thriller mode. Johnny Bravais gets a weird assignment: observe an upcoming battle in secret. It is believed that someone is manipulating Earth, keeping us at war, and a certain percentage of the combatants are disappearing. What he finds is some sort of alien harvesting the brain of a downed soldier. He attempts to interfere, and barely escapes with his life. Johnny then gets a "superman" treatment so he can compete with these creatures. But he is subject of a manhunt by them, and is ultimately captured. He finds out what the aliens use their captured fighters for - as command centers for gigantic fighting machines embroiled in an eons-long interstellar war.
