Smokescreen introduces movie star Edward Lincoln, whose latest film - shot on location in Spain - affords him his most challenging role to date. Upon completion of the film, "Link" returns to England to rest up, but soon an old friend asks him to go to South Africa to check on her race horses, which have not been doing well. Reluctantly, Link agrees, and is soon immersed in villiany and intrigue more deadly than in any of his films, reaching a chilling climax in a strange renenactment of his latest screen role.
