From George Alec Effinger, a humorous collection of spoofs: Maureen Birnbaum, Barbarian Swordperson (1993.) As Effinger explains on the back cover: after overhearing some Tulane co-eds at a nearby table, he took "one of those college girls, put a broadsword in her hands, and maroon[ed] her in the familiar mileus of my favorite SF authors." I read the ones from Magazine of F&SF because they had these whacky covers - these are the kind of tale that could make you fall out of your chair as you laugh so hard. Effinger has the language/tone "spot-on" and the Burroughs' venues in particular needed some lampooning. [I don't think I'd recommend reading all in one sitting, though...]

Original appearances from 1982 to 1994 - in Magazine of F&SF (2), Friends of the Horseclans, Foundation's Friends, The Fantastic Adventures of Robin Hood, and Grails: Visitations of the Night (the last one after this book came out.) "Maureen Birnbaum at the Looming Awfulness" was written for this book, and the last story, or "Feghoot" is revised from an earlier version that appeared in a program-book at a SF convention. There was a SFBC edition of this in 1994, which dropped the subtitle "The Complete Stories" and substituted illustrations and cover by Ken Kelly for the artwork by Peggy Ranson.
